could she have nerve damage?
my new horse is three years old. we've had her for about 4 months. when we went to look at her, the owner brought to our attention a scar underneath her belly.(in the same area a girth fits her) its about a foot long, and all the hair surrounding it is white. (shes a buckskin) the lady said she bought her that way, and that she could put her whole index finger in the scar.we THINK the seller cowboy roped her (my mom called her vet) to maybe get her to lead or stand tied or something. it all sounds fishy to me, that the lady took such a big chance with the mare.(we didn't think much about it) shes started under saddle isn't girthy, doesn't buck or rear with me, shes the sweetest mare and is so personable. is it possible that she has nerve damage? she doesn't mind it being brushed or touched.
the reason we think belly roped, is she has a line all the way around her middle. my trainer told us the same thing.
It sounds like you are saying that the rope scar is the depth of a finger width, there is no hair in the scar, but white hair next to it? I wouldn't refer to it as nerve damage so much as just scarring. If there is a scar rather than functional skin tissue, the superficial nerve endings in that area of skin are destroyed. Scar tissue has no sensation. The white hairs around it indicate damage to the pigment portion of the hair follicles, but the follicles are still functional in producing depigmented hair. There may or may not still be normal skin sensation in those areas. So there would be impaired sensation with this type of injury to the tissue. What is important to observe is the condition of the scarred area after you ride, since the horse will not indicate to you if there is an ulcer or pressure area developing. If there is no hair on the area, it is also more vulnerable to rubs and friction. Before and after you saddle her, just check that area for any lumps, bumps, or sores that may need attention. A fleece lined girth might be a good idea, but probably not really necessary.
It sounds like maybe this horse was a puller who wouldn't stand tied, and the wrong methodology and type of rope was used in the process of dealing with it. Only a thick, soft cotton rope can be safely used around the girth when this method is used, and the rope must be secured with the right kind of knot to assure it won't tighten around the girth.
