I just bought some snaffle bits, can I use these for my horse?

My horse was ridden last summer and that was it. When I got her she was still a bit green but had a good amount of groundwork done to her. Within the 2nd week of her 30 day training she was able to be ridden in the arena, and is starting to learn how to respond to the bit. The bit goes into her mouth real easy but she tends to still chew it. I haven't asked my trainer what she used on her yet but I wanted to know what yall think. I got these from a tack sale at $5 each. Also, I have a 5 year old Appy, she's 15.2. I just hope these can be used on her. Also, the eggbut looking one might have a little issue because when i twist it it feels like it gets stuck sometimes, so i had to kind of adjust it to let it twist freely, and it worked. but is that a bad snaffle if it sticks?

As mentioned, measure her mouth to ensure a proper fit. Also, if the bit has any rust on it, you shouldn't use it. Any rusty spots will chafe delicate skin, and if on the part inside her mouth could scratch inside and create discomfort. You should also sterlize it, using boiling water and a scrub. You don't know where that used bit has been. If she's chewing it alot, it might be too big, or too loose, allowing too much movement so she plays with it.

When you pull the reins on a snaffle, the movement pulls the outside rings back, this pushes the two bars up into an inverted 'v' and puts pressure on the roof of her mouth. So if it sticks in this position, it is going to be uncomfortable for her, and be of no help to her training. It has to release freely once the reins are relaxed.

Sadle and tack cleaners for my new horses tack?

Leather cleaners?
Well I have very nice tack ( A new Anky dressage bridle, a new jump bridle, new girth, new brestplate, a new stuben saddle and new leather halter) and I have dicided I would like to raise the care of my tack. Here are some questions to ask:

Everthing from the kind and color of sponge, to the write kind of boot buffer(metal cleaner, shampoo, conditioner, boot shine, and ect.)

The product(s) that I should aviod

How often I should do a deep clean/take everything apart.

I would like to take good care of my tack becuse about $2,000.00 in new tack im not going to misuse what I have

What I use in my store to keep the saddles I sell nice and supple is a product called Leather CPR. it cleans, conditons and softens the leather. We have florescent lighting in the store and my saddle stans are three tiered so the saddles get pretty close tot he lights. Before I started using this on the saddles when I took over the equine section, all the leather tack was dried out, disclored and in horrible condition. We had to clearance a lot out to get it gone and get all new stuff. i started using the Leather CPR and have noticed not only is there no drying out of the leather but some of the older stuff that had dried out has regained almost 95% of it's suppleness. I personally don't like neatsfoot oil but you can use it and it will darken leather to an extent. For heavens sake though do not soak anything in neatsfoot oil overnight. Yes you will get a nice rich brown color especially if you had light tack and wnated it darker, however exposing it to that much neatsfoot oil for that long of a time will cause the stitching to rot more quickly than regular use. If it is light and you don't like the color of it, rub it every other day with the enatsfoot oil, let it sit for about and hour and then wipe off the excess. Mink oil will also darken leather some and it's a "jelly" type pastey product, you rub it in , let stand 15 minutes and rub off the excess. It also helps to condition and waterproof your tack to an extent. as for silver cleaning (not bits though) i love "mother's mag polis" you can find it at an auto supply store, it is generally used on rims and what not on cars but I have found it works wonders cleaning old silver and maintaing the shine of new silver. Sponges i just use the 12 pack of synthetic sponges you can buy at any tack shop, though some people prefer a natural sponge. It really is a personal choice. Shampoos and conditoner are we talking for the horse? My fave (b/c I have palominos and greys) is white n brite shampoo. it darkesn the dark colors and makes whites sparkle. Conditoner I use the cowboy magic demineralizer conditoner. Boot shine to be honest I am not the one that shines my boots! i'll clean them but my dad who is an ex-marine and now retired police officer shines them for me! lol Having been a marine he can get a hell yeah shine on them that I can't get so about once a month hhe shines my boots up nice:) I deep clean my tack once a month at home and the store tack i do weekly. Everytime I am done riding I try and wipe it all down with a chamois cloth. This method has worked well for me for over 10 years. I have a super nice barrel saddle that cost more than my current horse and it still looks like it's maybe 2 years old instead of 10 even the silver on it!

i know nothing about dressage?

can i wear my feild boots in competitions/shows?

they have laces.. and they aren't the dress boot kind

I think everyone pretty much covered everything for you.
Your tack does not HAVE to be black-but it is preferred. Keep that in mind-some judges, unfortunately, will hold biases against it.
I personally like brown boots, gloves, and jackets much better than the black =] It has a very traditional, vintage feel to it. The black does look sharp though. I always wear black in equitation or dressage classes, and I'll pull out my brown boots and brown or dark olive green jacket for hunter classes.

Jr Cowhorse twisted wire dog bone bit?

Does anyone know much about the Jr Cowhorse Bits? Im looking for a different bit for my barrel horse, Ive been running him in a hackamore but my trainer said im not getting the lift that I need. Ive been in hunt for a bit for my guy Ive been looking at the Jr Cowhorse bits but not sure what deal of lift they give? Anyone know much about them? Ive also been looking at the Hodges Futurity bit with the dogbone. Has anyone tried this bit before? A few people suggested I go with a combo because he's used to the hackamore, any ideas? Ive also been looking at the Diamond Lifter and the Sharon Camarillo Light Lifter

I use a bit very similar to the Junior cowhorse bit with a dogbone mouthpiece on our two Tennessee Walkers. The feel on it is very nice-- lots of lateral control, and neither horse seems to be uncomfortable with the bit.

SOMEONE, I don't remember who, does use the Hodges Futurity bit on a new horse they bought. Maybe they'll see your post and respond? When I looked at it, it seemed like a nice mix of an easy hackamore and the cowhorse bit you are talking about.

I can't say enough good about the dogbone mouthpiece-- I'm a 'broken' or 'snaffle' mouthpiece fan from way back, but when I switched to gaited horses I was warned that it could cause discomfort for horses with shallow pallets, like my Walkers. When I switched to the dog bone mouthpiece, I noticed a much softer response in my horses, and they seem to really like the feel in their mouths.

Of course, as always, I recommend finding someone near you who uses those bits, and try them out-- there is nothing worse than spending $80 on a new bit, just to have it sit in the tack room because it didn't work out.

Loose-ring or eggbutt?

I wanted to get my horse a bit with a french link, but I can't seem to find an thicker eggbutt with a french link. I didn't want to get a really thin one because it's more severe, is a loose ring still ok? Will it pinch his mouth? He's in one right now, but doesn't like it that much. Any help finding the right bit?

Apart from the thickness of the bars themselves, you need to take into consideration what the rings will do for your horse. If he leans on the bit and your hands alot, opt for the loose-ring. It moves quite a bit in the horse's mouth and encourages play, which discourages leaning.

If he doesn't lean and it very quiet in his mouth, then go with the egg-butt. It's sits still much more than the loose-ring.

If you go with the loose-ring, either put bit guards on the bit to stop pincking, or buy a bit 1/2" too big, so the rings don't come into contact with the horse's lips as much. This is how I ride my mare and I've never had issues.

Also, look inside your horse's mouth. If he has a fat tongue and/or low palate, he may find a thinner bit more comfortable. Many people believe thicker bits are gentler but it's only true if the horse has space in its mouth to accomadate the thicker bit.

Personally, I prefer eliptical link snaffles. They're my favorite type of bit and I know many horses who go beautifully in them.

Good barrel racing bit?

What bit do you use for your horses in barrel racing? I have used a twisted wire snaffle in the past, and that has seemed to work fine since I don't put a whole lot of pressure on the horse's mouth. I was just wondering if there are other types of bits that would be good.

What kind of English bit?

I ride my gelding in a curb correction bit. I have been working him English because he is a very lofty and extended horse. I have been riding in my western bridle because he works AWESOME in this bit.

My question is...are there any bits out there that are similar in mouthpiece? I prefer an Uxter Kimberwick shank. But anything will work.

Please only answer if you know what a curb correction bit is and how it is used...I hate to post this after my questions but please don't waste my time or yours with answers that don't work. Thanks!

I would use a correction Kimberwicke; if your horse goes well in the curb correction, this will probably suit him well.

Edit: oops! Found more! These first few are D-rings; they will give you a more classic Hunter look, if that's something that's important to you. Plus you can use a curb chain with the D's as well, so that's just one more thing that's the same as the curb correction.

why do dressage bridles...?

why do a lot of dressage bridles have a flash nose band, and many professionals use the weymouth bits?
also, what horse boots do most top hunter/jumpers use on their horses (preferably leather), and are they super expensive?

Flashes may only be used Intro-2nd (sometimes 3rd level) They are only used on snaffle bridles... some people use them, because they are the "in" style for dressage. Others used them to help keep their horses from opening their mouths and showing resistance to contact while going on the bit. Some horses will open their mouths even while not resisting contact out of bad habit and a flash noseband can correct that.

Weymouth bits are only to be used by professional dressage riders showing 3rd Level-FEI Grand Prix... the Weymouth is on the double bridle which is optional at 3rd Level and Mandatory 4th level and above. Anyone showing at those levels wether, Jr/YR or Adult Ametuer under trainer advisement or a professional uses the double bridle with weymouth because it helps further contact and collection needed for the upper level movements. Ex (passage, piaffe, tempe-changes, piourette, etc)

As for boots Hunters are not allowed to show in boots! If you walk into the ring with any kind of boots on you will be disqualified immediately. For jumpers however people like to use open front boots because it trains the horse to pick up the front legs and not tap the poles. Pessoa's are nice, but expensive... Dover Saddlery has a brand that's a bit less expensive, looks and does the same thing... that's for leather. I like Wolf's Neoprine boots. For schooling my dressage horse or jumper I pefer to use polo wraps, but don't use them unless you know how to put them on correctly, because polo's applied wrong can cause serious damage to your horse's legs.
