How much does everything cost in the begging of owning a horse?

I found a very good place to board my horse for 200$ a year!
So how much will this all come out to:
A sadle(used or not if so what kind just something simple) saddle stand, girth, chinches, breastplate, cruppers, stirrups, saddle cloth, bridle, bit, reins, curb chain, lip strap, browband, lead rope, halter, stable rug, sheet, rug rollers, synthedic&leather body brushes, plastic;rubber; and metal curry comb, rubber washing mitt, face brush, mane comb, sponge, sweat scraper, hoof pick and oil brush, and a bot knife.

And also i have to pay for hay and grain so how much would that come out to a month.

What are the best saddle pads/ cinches?

What are the best saddle pads/cinchs to use with a Western saddle? I need a show pad, and I would like to get a new cinch, but I don't know which are best. My horse is a blue roan 14hand POA with a full blanket, so I want a relatively plain pad that doesn't compete with her spots.

It depends on your horse's back about which type of pad. If she has a bad back, an air ride pad would probably be best. Air ride pads are very easy on a horse's back. It is very easy on your horse's back and offers a lot of protection

As for cinches, I have used roper cinches, felt cinches, and neoprene cinches. I didn't like the neoprene; it had a tendency to slip if the horse sweat a lot. You have to be careful with roper cinches because they can irritate some horses because of their width. But that all depends on the horse. Difference between English and western horse riding?

I'd just like to know the differences between english and western horse riding. Oh, and if it isn't too much to ask, what are some really good tips. I know the basics.

There are many differences between English and Western riding. One of the differences between the two is the tack. All the tack is different. The saddles are very different; one of the examples is that a Western saddle has a horn. The bridles are different, the girths are different and are called cinches. There are also more differences.
Another difference is the style of riding itself. Western riders ride with their stirrups longer than English riders. They have a more "relaxed" posture. Their reins are looser and they hold the reins with their left hand.
The disciplines are different. Western riders do not do any jumping. Disciplines offered in Western are barrel racing, calf-roping, reining, etc. English disciplines include show jumping, dressage, eventing, etc. There are no Western disciplines offered in the Olympics.

THE WEAVER SMART CINCH ?

I've been using the same old school cinches for long enough, and it's time to upgrade

So what is your opinion on the Weaver felt- lined "Smart Cinch"??
Everyone I know swears by them , but I'm just doing alittle research before I buy.

Not sure how well they will hold up over time. My 27 strand mohair cinches are easy to wash in cold water and woolite, have always worn well (One of them is now 23 years old and shows NO noticable wear on it.

Ok, I've done barrels and poles before in gymkanna sort of things, I'm thinking of doing rodeo, but I'm wondering what tack I'm going to need.
Ok I'll need:
Western Saddle (Will a saddle with a high cantle work?)
both cinches
breast collar
blanket (is there any specifics?)
barrel reins
bridlle (do I need a specific bit? my horse is used to snaffle)

Anything else? Do I need leg protection? If so what?

If I'm wrong just tell me, like I just read that some barrel racers don't use back cinches should I use one? My horse was trained with one and I normally ride with one and my horse is younger so is there a preferrence sort of thing, especially is MHSRA?

You will need a barrel saddle. Billy Cook makes one that is not very expensive, it needs to be a tight fit between the front of the saddle, you and the back of the saddle.

A back cinch is optional, on the front one get a pro choice cinch. They are the best and if you can't get one get a cinch that has a stainless steel D ring.

You do not need a heavy duty breast collar, just a simple leather one. I

I run in a Charmayne James saddle pad, it is a really good one. something like that will work great.

They do have barrel racing reins and that is a good idea to have.

If your horse runs in a snaffel then use that but if he gets to where you can't control him then go to a wonder bit or ask someone to help you out.

You need protection for your horses legs and feet. SMB boots and bell boots are the best or you can use Pro Choice, they are good too.

Go get Charmayne Jame's book or Martha Joesy video's. That will be the best thing you can do.

Listen and watch the ladies you run with, you will learn so much and don't be afraid to go up to one and ask for help.

Different kinds of western cinches?

Okay so i need a replacement cinch for my western saddle that a friend just gave me. It's one of those where it's like tons of strings put together? And i was wondering wats the difference between those and just the regular cinches and the rope/string ones? are they for different saddles, horses, jobs? I use my horse for mostly trail and barrel racing...wat kind of cinch should it get?

I use only the neoprene. The rope cinches can pinch and rub. The neoprene is durable easily cleaned and a lot more comfortable for the horse.

What type of girth?

What type of girth/cinch do you use? I need to get a new one for my Arab (western saddle) and have heard lots of different opinions. Most people around here use the old style cotton but I hear the neoprenes are now the way to go.

I tend to be a traditionalist and prefer a mohair cord cinch. A good one will be double-layered, have a nice weave, lie flat, are immensely strong, last absolutely forever, and I've never, ever had them rub a horse. These tend to be expensive, but are well worth the money. A good one can be hard to find. National Roper Supply has them (I think) as do most custom saddle makers. I've had one on my custom saddle for 12 years and it's used almost every day and still soft and in beautiful condition. Wash a wool cinch with an old-fashioned wringer washer or stretch it on a board and use a mild horse shampoo and a pressure washer and rinse well a couple of times a year or when it gets absolutely filthy. Usually, you can let it dry, brush it off, and it will be fine without washing. A good mohair cinch has a bit of 'give' that makes it very comfortable for the horse. They also 'breathe' well.

Don't, however, waste your money on the more common 'wool blend' or 'cotton' cord cinches. These get crusty when the horse sweats, and aren't nearly as strong. Sweat actually hardens and wears away the strands, and weakens the cinch. I've seen them rub some horses raw, and burs and twigs stick to these like crazy. If you ride in an arena most of the time, and don't ride all day every day, they're probably OK to use.

Neoprene cinches work well for many people, but the worst cinch rubs I've seen were from neoprene cinches. If you go with one of these, don't buy one of the 'el cheapo' ones. Get a good one (like Professionals Choice) and make sure to wipe it clean after every use. The neoprene cinches that are smooth are much better than the ones with a 'pebble' pattern against the horse. Those tend to pull the hair and be uncomfortable. Some horses find the neoprene cinches to be too hot.

Nylon-backed fleece cinches work for some horses, particularly if you don't ride where twigs, grass, or burs are present (aka, you ride in an arena). They work well on a fat, out of shape horse, but must be kept scrupulously clean. If you use one of these, make sure the latigo on your saddle is leather instead of nylon. A nylon latigo and a nylon-backed cinch have no 'give' whatsoever and can be extremely uncomfortable for the horse.

Difference between western saddles (Plasure/Trail, Barrel, Roping, Show)?

I mainly ride trails and I am looking for a new saddle just wondering what the pros and cons are between the 4 different types

Do you think a higher seat is more comfy for long trails, what should i be looking for as far as comfort for me and my horse at a decent price(will be using ebay)

Pleasure/trail saddle: Some models have padded seats, widder stirrups and are a bit lighter weight so a horse can travel long distances easier and the rider will be comfortable on long trips. Many pleasure riders will use any type of saddle they like, as long as it fits both horse and rider well.
Barrel saddle - normally have a rounded skirt so it doesn't bother a horse's loins/back when moving fast. Often fairly light weight. Often have a higher saddle horn so there is something to grab onto when making the barrel.
Roping saddle - must be constructed extra heavy duty with a rawhide tree so it can handle the weight and stress of dallying a calf. Must have a heavy duty horn, must have a really strong tree, most have sturdy back cinches to keep the saddle centered when roping. Most roping saddles will weigh 35-45 pounds, so they aren't easy to lift onto the back of a horse.
Show saddle - styles vary between breeds. Often have alot of silver and flash. Current style for the stock breeds are light oil color, square skirts, alot of silver, alot of carving.
I watch my pennies very carefully, and I do alot of shopping on eBay. But I hate to say this, but I would strongly NOT recommend eBay for saddle shopping, unless you have tried that specific saddle and model on your horse before. Fitting a saddle on a horse is like fitting shoes on a person. Each horse varies immensely and what type of saddle fits one horse may very well not fit another right. You likely will buy a saddle and have minor problems and not even know what's wrong until your horse develops back pain and behavior problems start (Horses in chronic pain when saddled and rode start acting up - being cinchy, having problems moving properly, even kicking out can occur) Also, the quality between leather goods varies hugely. You do not want to buy a cheap, poorly made saddle. A cheap saddle might cost you $500 and last only a few years while causing your horse pain the whole time, and when you go to resell it it will be worthless. A decent quality used saddle might cost you $600, will fit your horse better and when you go to sell it in a few years will likely still be worth $600. I would recommend buying a used saddle at a consignment store, most will allow you a week or two trial. Or if nothing else, try some new saddles out and then attempt to buy that saddle on eBay, at least you'll know what you are getting.
The exact type of saddle you are getting is going to be much less important that the way if fits you and your horse. Good luck.

18 yro mare bites when you cinch her?

Everytime I go to tighten the cinch on my mare she turns and tries to bite me and when I wont let her she will grab whatever is closest to her(wether it be the trailer, the stirrup a board in her stall) and bites it as hard as she can while I am tightening the cinch. I just bought this mare a month ago and I am very easy when I cinch a horse as I have owned a very cinchy horse for the past 2 1/2 years. I dont feel anything under her belly on the girth line and I use a pretty expensive Professional Choice neoprene cinch. I always brush it of to be free of any hair or debris before saddleing. Also I notice she has a couple of missing patched of hair in the way of the girth, I am guessing from an old owner. So what could be causing this?

Something is going on to cause this. Is winter hair getting n the way and getting pulled? Keep your off hand between the cinch and the mare to avoid catching any of the long winter hair in the cinc. Did you change cinches and she is not accustomed to this one?: There is definitely a pain or irritation issue here.
