showmanship in hand w/ a halfinger pony?

ok at the barn that i'm at, i ride saddleseat and i before i was riding huntseat then western, i was hopeing to get back into showman ship because i had loads of fun with that and the horse that i'm hopeing to show in showman ship is a little halflinger pony, i was also wondering how i could get him to set and teach him hw to pivot. and when i did shownaship in hand hunt seat i wore my english habit and my horse wore an english bridle, for this would i just wear my vest tie jods and boots and what would my pony wear headgear wise?

I would think perhaps your Haflinger would wear a halter of some kind, (maybe the fancy western ones with the silver trim). I'm not really sure since I don't show that with my Haffie, and I'm not sure if you're specifically talking about a Western showmanship class solely for Haflingers or an open Western Showmanship class with all sorts of breeds.

The place to ask might be the YahooGroup for HaflingerFriends. I'm pretty sure there's some people who compete in showmanship with their Haflingers.

Wearing helmets?

So how many people wear helmets every time they ride? I see so many people riding that only wear helmets when they're showing or jumping. It's like some people have the mentality that if they're just schooling on the flat in the arena wearing their old jods and a sweatshirt, there is no need for a helmet. Or, if they're going out for a short hack spur of the moment, they're OK bareheaded.

I've also always been intrigued with the lack of helmets in the Western world. I know that it's not the proper headgear for a Western show, and I realize that Western work is "only" on the flat, but what do you think about it?

Personally, I ride English and nowadays I always wear one, whether or not it's convenient. When I was younger, however, and would go on trail rides, I didn't always. How about everyone else?
EDIT: If you don't wear a helmet, why? Are there any circumstances that you would? Just curious!

A fall from a horse say 16.5 hands and add the height of an average human (5 foot 8 Inches ) = 8 feet+
(I have allowed for half the height of the human)

Jump a fence that is say 2.5 feet high(small jump) and add a clearance of say another foot or so.

Now take a horse that refuses a jump. Rider goes flying at working canter speed some 10 feet onto their head.

Would you suggest the happy mouth mullen eggbutt snaffle bit?

My horse has an extremely strong head and gets terrible bruises on her gums. I know we need to work on suppleness, but as an additional factor, I've been looking at the shaped mullen mouth eggbutt bit with a happy mouth rubber coating. I'm hopping the mullen mouth will take pressure off of the bars of her mouth (where the bit sits on the gums). Has anyone used it? Does anyone have advise on suppling.

Happy Mouth bits are different from rubber bits. HM's are made of a semi-rigid plastic over a cable or solid metal core, and are usually much thinner than rubber bits. This doesn't mean they are harsher, because most rubber bits are so thick that they are uncomfortable for the horse to carry, unless the horse has an unusually large space between top and bottom jaws and a thin tongue.

My friend's Saddlebred had been 'trained' to go in llama position, a typical spooked-up, wild-eyed, crazy high-stepping show horse. She tried several bits, then took him to an eventing trainer who used the flexible, shaped mullen mouth Happy Mouth bit on him. This trainer had had a very strong, forward, difficult-to-control eventer. She'd tried all the usual stronger bits on him, but he just rebelled more against the increased discomfort and pain in his mouth. She went to that flexible HM, and he settled down to business, no more fighting the bridle. My friend's Saddlebred also started to drop his head to a manageable, healthy position, and started to learn to soften and respond correctly with the HM.

As far as how to supple a horse, I like to use the mildest possible headgear. The worse the horse fights it, the softer the bridle and hands I try to use. A good horse had gotten some bad riding, and started fighting and rearing, to resist leaving the pasture. The bad rider (the one who created the problem!) wanted to switch from the bosal which the horse had gone nicely in for several years, to "just a snaffle". First of all, it wasn't a lack of a bit that caused the problem, so adding a bit wasn't the answer. Second, when she showed me the torture device she wanted to use, I looked at it with disbelief for just a second, then threw it in the air as if it was red hot! It was 1/8" diameter, twisted wire, double-offset (W) mouthpiece. In her horrible hands, it would have been a brutal punishment for an innocent horse who was already dealing with pain and stress every time this woman rode her!

Instead of using something so harsh, I backed of from even the thick, flexible bosal, and started riding her in a plain, flat halter with the reins attached to the side rings. The softer I was, the less the mare had to fight against, so she became soft too. I thought of it as my iron will expressed through Nerf hands (am I showing my age, does anyone else remember the soft Nerf foam toys?) The mare came around, although she was never entirely the same horse again; an innocence had been lost forever. This horse had never argued with her rider before that rider started leasing her, and riding out without supervision. Moral of this story - make sure you know both who isriding your good horse, and how they are riding it!

Beyond headgear and hands, do lots of lateral exercises with your horse. Shoulder-in, haunches-in, leg yield, half-pass, serpentines. You will build responsiveness, flexibility, and lightness.

Bitless Bosal Horse

Collection without bit?

My horse cannot have a bit in his mouth, what can I do to get him collected and round? What type of headgear can I use such as hackamore,etc. I tried a bitless bridle attachment on him and I hated it. I dont know if the real ones are any more effective. He goes good in the jim warner hackamore but I need something to get him collected/round. This is what i bought for the bitless bridle:

he can't have a bit because of tounge damage (before I bought him) And I do use him for barrel racing. Also I didnt word the question right I do have him collected. Im more looking to get him round to strengthen his neck and back I dont want him hollow backed.

Why don't you try a bosal. Here is some info on it. I tried one on my horse, it was functional and I liked using it.

Facemask in Sparring?

Ok, So I do TKD and Krav Maga. Recently we have started sparring a lot and I was wondering if it would feasible to use headgear with a facemask while sparring.

I and the people I spar with don't mind taking a few to the head or face but showing up for class or an interview with a broke nose or bruising is not acceptable anymore.

My main question is if the facemask will jar around alot when taking punches or if it will be more of a liability then protection. No one at my gym has ever used one so they arn't much help on the topic.

P.s. We are currently using leather TKD headgear if you need to know. No face protection. Only ear (side) and top padded.

I have done both, and the face mask helps a lot. Be warned that your partners will attack your face more aggressively than ever before now that you are "safe".

It's still going to hurt.

I say do it, because in a real fight, almost everyone goes for the punch to the face.

What to Wear to a 4-h horse show?

Hello!

I am going to go to my first 4-h show soon. I was wondering... what should I wear? I will be competing in Western Pleasure/pattern classes and possibly halter. Do I need chaps? Can I wear my helmet, or should I get a hat... what do most people wear? I have a couple nice but simple western shirts in my closet, but should I buy something fancier, if so where could I get nice show clothes for cheap ( I am in Nebraska). Do I need a show saddle? Any other tips, advice, websites, etc would be great!!

Depends on the show. The basic rules probably state that you have to wear a long sleeved, button up western style shirt, long pants, and boots, and headgear of some kind.

At some 4-H shows, that's exactly what you'll see. At others, it's not. For instance, in our state, you'd look totally out of place wearing anything less than a regular show outfit (including chaps) complete with silver show saddle, super nice horse (complete with fake tail), etc. in the WP, HUS, eq, HMS, SMS, etc. Our western riders wear hats, but I know some states require helmets--you'd have to check the rules. Some states don't have a huge WP thing going and you won't see the same level or quality, so your attire isn't going to be quite the same. It really depends on your area.

Hobby Horse can supply you with regular (and in style) western show clothes for a low price, though they won't be as fancy or unique as buying more expensive ones (but they're certainly a reliable option). You can also find stuff (new and used, including tack) on Ebay--a great resource.
