my horse wears a snaffle and he sometimes can get strong with me on the cross country course and when im galloping and stuff, and i dont want to get a harsher bit, so would a running martingale help control my horse?

Checke the link that Burgundy gave you. It is rather informative, except that she got her martingales mixed up. A stanind martingale is used to control the head of a horse that throws it a lot. a running martingale can be used on horses that get strong. this is the better of the two but please note that the martingale is only allowed in jumping classes at most shows. check your rules and regulations books as to what is allowed at each show. i dont know what type of snaffle you are using but I would assume that you are using an eggbutt. Try a slow twist snaffle or a jointed slow twist snaffle with a roller. or a french link. these bits are not harsher but they work better than a regular snaffle. also, if you do buy a new bit, ride him in that bit and then switch to the old snaffle and go back and forth every few weeks. this will keep his mouth soft as well as increase his attention and willingness to listen.

This horse.....

http://cavalletti.com.au/viewad_horses.php?id=53872

I really like due to his... clydie-ness!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE CLYDESDALES!!<3
anyway LOL.

I'm not a big chestnut fan, but am growing with them. I would like to attempt both jumping and dressage (amature), but to me it seems this horse takes big jumps as to not clip his hoofs on the bar, which is alright i suppose. I can;t really tell anything about his conformation....

To me, i usually ask why a horse uses a martingale (correct me if im wrong) because at my riding school (which ive been going to for years) the horses who use martingales are either young and building there neck muscles, throw their heads up while doing something or is rushing and going to fast....... still correct me if im wrong <=]

All answers are taken!

xxx.paris

your are correct. but if you are looking to jump or even dressage etc. don't get such a heavy horse. you will have hard time keeping them going, keeping them sounds, and they are not comfortable. at least to me...i don't like riding a couch over 4 ft oxers! or doing a XC course on such a large, slow animal. or doing dressage and a not so elegant horse.

there is expections to the rule so no one get mad e ut every draft, draft cross horse i have knows have never been very successful in much and most have not been comfortable for their riders. they feel odd because they re so heavy. their joints are not made to do that they are too heavy for that kind of riding. they were made to pull carts...like many warm bloods, but Oldenburg's hano's etc have also been breed "down" to get a more athletic, comfortable, successful show jumper or dressage type horse.

i like the last horse better, the BS mare :)

Hi i need help please!!! I am looking into getting a new saddle. I need one bad! my gelding gets sore after i ride him , We run barrels. I would like to get a treeless bob marshall saddle but its about 1600 for the one i want and then there a hilason thats about 600. i know i wont get the best quality if i would get the one. But i would like ALL inputs! please. Even if its not a treeless what would you recommend.
forgot to say i do use a good pad
i dont use a breast collar on him he is still in a german martingail. I havent really moved it to much around cause you can tell it doesnt fit well casue it doesnt lay down in the back.

Hi!
I would suggest investing in a quality brand used saddle. They are available in a wide price range, and offer the quality reputation at an affordable cost. Also make sure you have the correct tree size. You can easily do this by taking a flexible piece of wire and forming it over your horses' withers, then trace the wire shape onto a piece of cardboard and cut it out. Then when you go to look at a saddle you can place the cut out into the saddle and see if there are any pressure points! Also dont use tack that doesnt fit. A martingales purpose is to keep the horses head down, but by taking away that freedom of movement your horse may be over compensating and causing strain that cannot be fixed by a new saddle. The horses neck is its balance center, and any restriction can cause all sorts of problems, so if you are going to use one, make sure it fits correctly.
Hope this helps.

Hope this helps!

Raised Running Martingale http://horsehq.net/raised-running-martingale/ http://horsehq.net/raised-running-martingale/#comments Thu, 16 Apr 2009 08:18:06 +0000 HorseHQ http://horsehq.net/raised-running-martingale/ Ok I still dont understand- martingale help !?

Ok , show hunter/ jumper but mainly hunter. I always see alot of people in my over fence classes wearing a martingale, and I want to get one BUT idk what kind to get. Standing or Running? Flat or Raised? What even IS the difference. All I know is that someone said that one of them is really dangerous- and obivously dont want that one. Also- if you know of the good brands and kind that works for all you hunter/jumpers I would love to know =]. ALSO how do you put them on? Like where does it attatch?
please note: I was told it makes your horse look more "put together" and I am going to buy one. Please just answer my question if you know.
OK OK OK. Not buying one. Now everyone can stop aruguing against each other on "whose right and whose wrong" Apparently you all have different thoughts on martingales and what they are and where they are used. My horse already does well- like I said I only wanted one to LOOK PRETTY, if it didnt cost him pain or disability.

A) Why are you buying a martingale? Does your horse need one, or are you buying it because a lot of othe rpeople have it? It is GOOD if your horse doens't need a martingale!
B) What is your horses natural headset? I rode a TB that wouldn't bend his neck for anything, he looked like a WP horse, but the hunter judges at A and AA shows liked it.
C) Running martingales are only used in jumper classes to prevent the horse's head from getting too high. The good thing about these is that the rider essentially controls thow tight they are by how tight his reins are, so when he releases over the jumps, the horse is free to use his head.

Standing martingales are used in hunter classes, and are always the same tightness. Though they are permissable, if it came down to you and another girl to win the class and it was very close, they judge might pick the other girl if she wasn't using a martingale. They should, at no times, be used in flat classes.

D) As for flat vs. raised, I prefer raised. It's all decorational. However, rasied are a bit more traditional for the hunter ring.

E) Martingales consist of a ring that goes around the horse's neck and rest above the withers. This is used so that when the horse lowers his head, he doesn't trip over the rest. There is another strap that runs through the ring, with two ends. One end connects to the girth. You slide it so that it is in the middle of the girth, and then you buckle the girth. It should rest in the middle of the horse's belly, and come up between the two front legs. (For standing continue on, for running, skip the next paragraph)

From there, STANDING martingale run up and connect to the bottom of the nose band. Basically, there is a leather strap running from the belly to the bottom of the nose.

http://www.brighteyesandbobtails.co.uk/acatalog/444G_Standing_martingale.JPG

From there, RUNNING martingales split into two straps (it looks like a Y). Each strap is run through a rein. With running martingales, you should use stoppers to prevent the two straps to run up to the bit.
http://www.uksaddlery.com/usrimage/4120.jpg (This is a good running martingale with stoppers, the next pictures has no stoppers, which once again, I don't reccomend, but it show the martingale better.) https://ssl5.lon.gb.securedata.net/toptack.co.uk/merchantmanager/images/uploads/JW8-MARTINGALE_lrg.jpg

F) Putting on a standing martingale. Put the loop around the horses neck, with the ennd of the strap with the biggest loop closest to the horse's belly. Next put on the saddle so that the girth is connected to the saddle on one side, but not the other. Run the big end of the strap through the girth, and then buckle the girth as usual. Next, put on the bridle. Take the other end of the strap, put it through the bottom of the nose band, and buckle the nose band. Tah-dah.

For a running martingale, first you have to unhook the reins from each other. Run one end of each of the short "Y" straps through one rein each. Then connect the reins. Hold the bridle and the martingale together. Put the martingale and reins over the horses neck AT THE SAME TIME, then give the horse the bit and go one with bridling him. Next put on his saddle, and attch the other end of the strap to the girth in the same way as with the standing martingale.

G) Fitting the martingale: The only way that I have ever heard is with standing. Once the martingale is attached, and the horse tacked up, use your hand and pull the strap of the martingale up so the it touches the horse's neck. If it is the correct length, it should run along the neck from the chin to the chest with no tightness or looseness. I don't know how to fit running martingales, and you should always have a professional check to make sure it fits correctly.

H) If it were me, if my horse's headset was already pretty good, I would just use a martingale to school in. There is also a bungee, which is similar to a standing martingale, but not really. It isn't allowed in the show ring, but in my opinion, it is a great schooling accessory. It strengthens neck muscles and promotes good headset.

Martingale Cob Size http://horsehq.net/martingale-cob-size/ http://horsehq.net/martingale-cob-size/#comments Sun, 22 Feb 2009 07:28:29 +0000 HorseHQ http://horsehq.net/martingale-cob-size/ Types of martingales for my horse?

I need to buy a martingale for my horse. We do jumpers, and possibly some flat classes and hunter/jumper. Is this the type of martingale i'd need? I get confused with standing and running so im pretty sure its running for jumpers, right?

http://www.doversaddlery.com//product.asp?pn=X1-09171&cn=1670

What is your opinion on this martingale? This one was cheap since I don't have a lot of money.

Also, for the sizing, its full and cob size. I'm not sure what her bridle size is since i got it from someone for free, but her halter is a full and its a little big. The cob size halter is kinda small, shes like in between sizes. Should I get her the Full?

To add to the people above me- make sure you buy rein stops, such as these:

http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-012&ids=135452136

They go on your reins between the martingale rings and your bit to keep the rings from possibly getting caught on the rein buckles and having a huge accident.

Tote Horse Brush http://horsehq.net/tote-horse-brush/ http://horsehq.net/tote-horse-brush/#comments Sat, 27 Sep 2008 02:05:27 +0000 HorseHQ http://horsehq.net/tote-horse-brush/ Horse Show in Three Weeks?

Hi...so I have been riding for five years, and two years ago I bought a horse which I planned to show. She has come along way, from Barrel Racer to English U/S and O/F and is doing great, and we have signed up for a show in three weeks.

My question is a number of things...

1.) how do you best prepare mentally?
2.) even if i am physically fit, do you follow any special diets or excercise routines prior to shows to help you stay in a light, focused mood or just in top performance?
3.) how do you normally organize your things...i wanted to get a tote for my things like brushes etc so i don't forget anything, but they are all quite expensive, if i'm on a budget how do i keep organized?
4.) what does your essentials for your horse shows consist of, just curious i have most of the things i just wondered?

thanks so much, any other showing tips would be helpful!

mentally prepare yourself by making up courses or have someone make them up (to memorize for practice) and try practicing memorization games. the diet, try to eat a balanced dinner the night before, try spaghetti as it will geive you energy for the next day. try to eat healthy and stay away from sodas (theyll make you crash) you can organize all your things in an old backpack, or even an old tote. anything you have that will hold your supplies. BEFORE you go, MAKE A LIST of ALL the things you need. This inclused your horse's coggins, haynets, your riding gear, any crops, spurrs, martingales, ect you need. You may want to bring a snack, and a couple of drinks. Dont forget your saddle, bridle, girth, and cleaned saddle pad. make sure all your items are cleaned so they look nice. Also, i would bring extra hair ties/hair scrunchies and bobbypins or a hairnet. judges dont like to see hair in your face. Most of the things you need for a horse show are:
Horse's items:
Trailer, water buckets, haynet, hay, grooming supplies, braiding kit, tack, halters, leadropes, COGGINS (a MUST), first-aid kit, sponges, shampoo/conditioner (if you are staying overnite, or have a long break between events, i would bring it anyway), any medications your horse needs, if your horse kicks, bring a red ribbon to tie onto his tail, anything else you feel you need. (its better to over-pack then forget something at home)
Yourself:
Hairnets, hairbrush, safety pins/shoe strings (for numbers), money, lunch/snacks, water bottle, riding aparrell, any other nesceties you feel you need. (over packing is ok, and its better than leaving something at home!)

Tips:
Try to stay calm and stress free
Winning isnt everything, its not the end of the world if youdont place
dont panic if you loose something, ask the grounds keeper to help you find it.
Talk to the judge after the show to see how you can improve.
have fun and stay safe!

Hope you have a great time at the horse show! There LOTS of fun!!! Hope the information above helps!!

I'm getting a running martingale for my horse. I'm doing show jumping with him. I'm not sure if I should get a regular running martingale or a breastplate with a running martingale attachment. Any significant advantages/disadvantages of having or not having a breastplate other than the saddle stays there better? My saddle's never slid before.. so do you think it's really necessary?
i know what a martingale is for.. i wouldnt be getting it if he didnt need it..
no i do not mean a standing martingale. running martingales are not only perfectly legal in show jumping, but are the only type of martingale allowed.

I've always prefered a breastplate with a martingale attachment, but that's me. You may NOT always be riding your horse and sometimes those breastplates come in mighty handy!

what is the difference between a standing martingale and a running martingale?

i was just wondering cause i usually ride horses saddle seat and drive ponies. i thing we use running martingales, but i went to test ride a pony on sunday and they used a running martingale. it hooked up to the pony's cavasson but the ones we use at my barn are threaded through the reins. not nasty answer's please!!

Running = attached to the girth and the reins are run thru metal hoops - applies pressure to the bars of the mouth.
Standing = attached to the girth and the noseband - applies pressure to the nose - usually used on horses that toss their heads / think about rearing.

Horse Head http://horsehq.net/horse-head/ http://horsehq.net/horse-head/#comments Mon, 02 Jun 2008 04:53:22 +0000 HorseHQ http://horsehq.net/horse-head/ What suggestions do you have for teaching my horse to put down her head?

My horse and I are starting eventing with Pony Club and we need a lot of work with dressage! She likes to have her nose up in the air and be alert plus her neck is not very supple. How can I get her to keep her head down and her neck rounded while riding? Thanks! :)
I have tried alternating contact in the reins and she does not respond to it.

There are a lot of potential reasons for this problem. But probably the most frequent are problems with tension / anxiety, and problems with the bit.

Tension and anxiety can come from too much pressure or from pressure that is never released. Horses are trained by applying a particular pressure and releasing that pressure when the horse offers the desired behavior. Key areas that cause problems for eventers and other English riders are the use of too much force for contact in an attempt to keep the horse slow or driving it into the bit to collect. Horses who are "too hot" need retraining to self-carry the correct speed, but many riders are unaware of this or are unaware of how much they can do to correct the problem. Thus, they hold the horse too tightly and then push the horse forward and the conflict between go and stop aids generates stress for the horse, which shows up as high head, hollow back and a variety of other problems.

Bits are another perennial source of problems. Just as the horse really does not need a lot of leg pressure - they can feel a fly land on their hairs after all - they don't need a lot of bit pressure to cause pain on their sensitive gums, cartilage and tongue. If being ridden is like a dentist visit without Novocaine, no wonder horses struggle with and evade the bit. Lots of ways to go wrong here. Even an O ring jointed snaffle can cause problems because of fit, nutcracker effect, pinching the lips or a gag effect. And then there is the use of completely inexcusable torture devices like twisted wire mouthpieces, intentional gag bits, tom thumbs, cathedral bits or spade and spoon bits.

Tie downs, martingales, weird bits to "put pressure on the poll" are all excused by the "need to get my horse's head down". But they don't fix the problem - they mask it. The problem is that the horse is tense, in pain or afraid. The high head, inverted carriage and star gazing are signs of these problems.

So start with the horse on a completely loose rein and see how she does. If she goes rushing off - that's a training problem that needs to be addressed - I've done lots of responses for people whose horses rush, you can look for one or drop me an email.

If she doesn't and she lowers her head after a while (at least a few laps of the arena at the walk), then it might be too much rein pressure or bit discomfort. Try to draw back slowly on the reins and find out where her head goes up and then go for a little slack so she comes back down.

At the same time, check her bit and bridle. A bit that pinches the lips is bad. The best snaffle you could pick is something equivalent to a D-ring Myler comfort snaffle. This generally avoids pinching and nutcracker effect. If the bridle is too loose or too tight, that can also cause problems.

Next, let's talk about suppleness. Horse neck muscles are primarily across the top of the neck. To relax and stretch these, the neck needs to be able to go long and low. You can train a horse to lower its head on lead rope and stretch this muscle - I've also done some responses on that which you should be able to find here at Y!A. But even when that works, you need to follow up under saddle by letting your horse warm up and cool down long and low, and letting her have long and low periods when working.

Side to side bending can be done at the stop, but don't do this a lot, don't do it when the horse is not warmed up, and don't go to extremes. Thirty to forty five degrees of bend is fine. If you bend while riding, this is risky to the horse's training, but the safest way is to bend to the inside of the turn. You will need good seat and legs to keep the horse from falling in or out however when doing that. Never counter bend as this damages the turn cue and response.

A relaxed horse tends to take on a naturally athletic frame that can be shaped, but it must be shaped gently, without ruining stop, go or turn responses. A horse trainer is your best bet for this, and the horse trainer should show you exercises to help the horse retain the training. However, keep in mind that many horse trainers also believe in doing things which they do not realize are damaging to the horse's mental state and training progress, including counter-bending, gadgets, driving the horse to the bit, and using drastic bits.

I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and your horse.
