I might be getting a 7 yr old Dark Bay Paso Gelding. What color saddle blanket would look good on him?

I am just all-purpse english, but I want a good one. I was thinking hunter green since I have a halter, lead, and these rope reins that are greent.

Also, what colour saddle and bridle?
Ya, I think the hunter green and brown together. lol

Gosh...dark bays look great in a LOT of colors. I like the traditional hunter, burgundy & navy, in general, but a baby blue would be cute and fun for hacking around. The girth goes through a thick, vinyl-like keeper, not the usual nylon strap ones. They do NOT move, and they look great. I get so many compliments on mine. I use it for dressage and jumping. Moxie makes awesome products. Their horse boots w/fleece lining are really, really nice!

For tack, you can't go wrong with the classic havannah (dark) brown. I would definitely go with dark/havannah brown.

High School Rodeo stuff?

I'm going to start some showing in high school rodeo (20x) this summer. But right now I'm learning to rope and tie goats. (I already barrel race and pole bend.)

Where is a good place to buy any roping supplies I will need for my horse, a rope, piggin string, etc.

(Right now I ride in a barrel saddle with good quality saddle pad, breast collar, barrel racing bit, bridle and roping/gaming reins - plus splint and bell boots - I will ride in a flank cinch when I find one that fits my chubby horse.) =]

I have an instructor with experience in the events, so if you have any other advice please add it!
I'll only be doing breakaway roping, not regular calf roping. My saddle now is fine, I just wrap the horn when I rope.

In breakaway roping the rope is attached to the horn with string, so when I rope the calf it will break off easily. It won't do any damage with the wrapping.
(I've talked to a pro about wrapping the horn.)

Which Saddle Pad should I get (Western riders)?

The Impact Gel ones are great, but they don't last long, and they get ugly quick and they're harder to clean.
The Pro Choice ones are made of that material that seriously lasts FOREVER.
I still have all my Pro Choice pads from years ago just like that and they look perfect. My Impact Gel pad is falling apart and is about 2 years old.
For my next pad, I'm getting one that's made of similar material to the Pro Choice you picked out.

So, stick with that one (:

Butt Snaffle Bit

My horse was ridden last summer and that was it. When I got her she was still a bit green but had a good amount of groundwork done to her. Within the 2nd week of her 30 day training she was able to be ridden in the arena, and is starting to learn how to respond to the bit. The bit goes into her mouth real easy but she tends to still chew it. I haven't asked my trainer what she used on her yet but I wanted to know what yall think. I got these from a tack sale at $5 each. Also, I have a 5 year old Appy, she's 15.2. I just hope these can be used on her. Also, the eggbut looking one might have a little issue because when i twist it it feels like it gets stuck sometimes, so i had to kind of adjust it to let it twist freely, and it worked. but is that a bad snaffle if it sticks?

As mentioned, measure her mouth to ensure a proper fit. Also, if the bit has any rust on it, you shouldn't use it. Any rusty spots will chafe delicate skin, and if on the part inside her mouth could scratch inside and create discomfort. You should also sterlize it, using boiling water and a scrub. You don't know where that used bit has been. If she's chewing it alot, it might be too big, or too loose, allowing too much movement so she plays with it.

When you pull the reins on a snaffle, the movement pulls the outside rings back, this pushes the two bars up into an inverted 'v' and puts pressure on the roof of her mouth. So if it sticks in this position, it is going to be uncomfortable for her, and be of no help to her training. It has to release freely once the reins are relaxed.

I think everyone pretty much covered everything for you.
Your tack does not HAVE to be black-but it is preferred. Keep that in mind-some judges, unfortunately, will hold biases against it.
I personally like brown boots, gloves, and jackets much better than the black =] It has a very traditional, vintage feel to it. The black does look sharp though. I always wear black in equitation or dressage classes, and I'll pull out my brown boots and brown or dark olive green jacket for hunter classes.

Western Pleasure Saddle

For western pleasure what color would best suit my dun gelding?

As far as the saddle pad goes? The saddle is a brown/slightly auburish shade, same with the bridle.

Subtle, earth tones are best...There is no substitute for a genuine, using saddle blanket...not a wild colored, coordinating one that matches your hat or chaps or whatever, unless your hat and chaps are subtle as well. Black looks very good on a dun, with a subtle earth tone blanket with black woven into it. The more subtle you dress, the more you will appear to be part of your horse and if there is any extra movement or travel issue that needs improvement, it will be somewhat masked. There is also no substitute for good, long, heavy harness reins as well, unless you are using a Rommel. If you want to add some flashy splash, use good quality sterling strategically placed.

anyone have silver fox brand reins?

For $6 more, you can get the Henri de Rivel Flat Laced Reins, also from Chick's. They are much better quality and look nicer too.

EDIT: Riz, I guess if you just needed cheap black reins and were willing to make do until you could afford better, the Silver Fox ones would be OK in a pinch. The leather doesn't even feel very nice though, and the black dye rubs off every time you clean it (or if they get sweaty.) And I agree with you about Kincade.

Which English reins are lightest?

Is biothane ("equileather") the lightest material for reins to be made out of? I am trying to find really lightweight reins so there is as little weight hanging off of my lesson horse's mouth as possible. (I want to buy my own pair instead of having my instructor buy them, so I can keep them and use them on my own horse someday. Instructor is OK with this!)

Cotton web, rubber (which seems heavy to me), leather or biothane - which do you think is lightest? I don't have any big tack shops near me, so I can't comparison shop!
Oh and I can't bring myself to use nylon...which all seem to have snap ends anyway, which seem like they'd be really heavy and band against the metal of the bit! I use a snaffle.

Of importance is which one feels the best in your hand? Biothane might be the lightest, but how does it feel to hold? What if the reins get pulled from your hands? I've only seen pictures of it in catalogs, and it looks thin and hard to me.

Personally, I like cotton web reins, for the feel of them. They are also lighter than leather or rubber, although that's never really been a concern for me. I think the weight of half a pair of reins (you're holding up the other half) does not really affect the horse at all.
