Leather cleaners?
Well I have very nice tack ( A new Anky dressage bridle, a new jump bridle, new girth, new brestplate, a new stuben saddle and new leather halter) and I have dicided I would like to raise the care of my tack. Here are some questions to ask:

Everthing from the kind and color of sponge, to the write kind of boot buffer(metal cleaner, shampoo, conditioner, boot shine, and ect.)

The product(s) that I should aviod

How often I should do a deep clean/take everything apart.

I would like to take good care of my tack becuse about $2,000.00 in new tack im not going to misuse what I have

What I use in my store to keep the saddles I sell nice and supple is a product called Leather CPR. it cleans, conditons and softens the leather. We have florescent lighting in the store and my saddle stans are three tiered so the saddles get pretty close tot he lights. Before I started using this on the saddles when I took over the equine section, all the leather tack was dried out, disclored and in horrible condition. We had to clearance a lot out to get it gone and get all new stuff. i started using the Leather CPR and have noticed not only is there no drying out of the leather but some of the older stuff that had dried out has regained almost 95% of it's suppleness. I personally don't like neatsfoot oil but you can use it and it will darken leather to an extent. For heavens sake though do not soak anything in neatsfoot oil overnight. Yes you will get a nice rich brown color especially if you had light tack and wnated it darker, however exposing it to that much neatsfoot oil for that long of a time will cause the stitching to rot more quickly than regular use. If it is light and you don't like the color of it, rub it every other day with the enatsfoot oil, let it sit for about and hour and then wipe off the excess. Mink oil will also darken leather some and it's a "jelly" type pastey product, you rub it in , let stand 15 minutes and rub off the excess. It also helps to condition and waterproof your tack to an extent. as for silver cleaning (not bits though) i love "mother's mag polis" you can find it at an auto supply store, it is generally used on rims and what not on cars but I have found it works wonders cleaning old silver and maintaing the shine of new silver. Sponges i just use the 12 pack of synthetic sponges you can buy at any tack shop, though some people prefer a natural sponge. It really is a personal choice. Shampoos and conditoner are we talking for the horse? My fave (b/c I have palominos and greys) is white n brite shampoo. it darkesn the dark colors and makes whites sparkle. Conditoner I use the cowboy magic demineralizer conditoner. Boot shine to be honest I am not the one that shines my boots! i'll clean them but my dad who is an ex-marine and now retired police officer shines them for me! lol Having been a marine he can get a hell yeah shine on them that I can't get so about once a month hhe shines my boots up nice:) I deep clean my tack once a month at home and the store tack i do weekly. Everytime I am done riding I try and wipe it all down with a chamois cloth. This method has worked well for me for over 10 years. I have a super nice barrel saddle that cost more than my current horse and it still looks like it's maybe 2 years old instead of 10 even the silver on it!

I got my saddle pad off of ebay and it's lime green and black and white. For about that price. You just have to do a lot of looking.

I have a close contact HDR saddle and I'm looking for a good fitting pad to go with it. A hunter/jumper pad would be best. HDR saddles have very high knee pads though, so the saddle pads I've been using just slide back and the saddle leaves sore marks where it's rubbed. Any suggestions on where I can find one would be great! Thanks!

I'm not a fan of HDR saddles because of where and how they are made, however, if there's a pad that can help your situation, Tolkat probably has one.

Best horse people in history?

Who do you think were the best horse people? If you want to give specific names that is great, but I was looking more for cultures. Like I think the Hunns were some of the best horse people in history. There is some evidence that they were the one who created stirrups. They would even cook meat between the horses back and the saddle pads while they rode.

Who or what cultures do you think were the best.

Please don't say Native Americans - try to be somewhat specific... Plains indians, Apachees, Nez Pierce.... Please don't leave it at Native Americans.
MR - Ghengis Khanand his Mongols are probably my favorite in history. He conquered the largest continous land expanse in history - all from the back of a horse. His armies could cover 80 miles a day on horse (impressive even by todays standards), and to help manage that empire he created a system very similar to the Pony Express.

The Hunns and any Plains Indian that rode in a buffalo hunt come in a close second.

Knights from the 8th Century upwards. With the invention of stirrups, they were able not only to mount and dismount on the battle field but ride in those immensely heavy suits of amour and chain mail plus fight on top of that. Being able to deliver blows from above made them superior in battle.The battle of Tours showed that no infantry could hope to beat well-equipped and trained horsemen on the field of battle.

I have a 15.3 7 yr TB and a 17" Saddle.. He usually takes cob or even pony. His halter and bridle are cob and his martingal but we always have to shortnen it.. Im ordering a numnah on the internet from the UK and i was looking at my saddle pads and they all say Full but im not sure if thats going to be to big so would a Cob or Full be better?

Go for a full - the full size will fit a bigger variety of saddle sizes than anything else. I would much rather a slightly larger numnah than one that is too small. Mine is a full size and fits anything from 16.5" regular flapped saddles all the way up to 18" with forward and long flaps.

My horsey's saddle pad isn't working, there are sores all over her back. I am sure it's NOT the saddle because when I put the saddle on by it's self it's nice, snug, and doesn't move.
My horsey looks really pretty, she's a nice tan (from the tanning booth I got her). I was thinking I wanted to get a buckskin baby from her so If I breed her to my darker tan hairless horse will that produce the buckskin coloring I need for my showing next year?
Last question: my mare is a gaited hairless horse, do you think she'd be able to run barrels? *after she's dont having the baby and I buy the right saddle pads*

I want to buy a new leather show jumping saddle and am deciding between either havana brown or newmarket brown. My horse is a light dappled grey. Also should I match my bridle, jumping boots & girth+extras with the same colour or just leave them havana brown & have only the saddle newmarket??

I show both English and Western and I would never allow my horse's color to impact the color of leather I purchase. Yes, buy your saddle pads and other tack to match your horse's tone, but do not pick leather color to match your horse.
A saddle is a long term purchase. Your main criteria should be - does this fit my horse's back properly? Does it fit me well? Does it allow me to ride in a good equitation position? And does it conform to the current show look and rules in my area?
Most horses are not shown in black tack. There is no rule against it, at least not in my show books, but it won't be as fashionable as brown tack. If you show it's important that you look experienced, modern and knowledgable, and you will want to use saddles that look similar to what other exhibitors use. The only time English tack is often black is in dressage, in hunters and on-flat classes you seldom see black.
As for whether you choose havana or newmarket brown, I think this is more personal taste. I prefer a browny brown tone, and not one that's too red.
The only other thing I'd try to match would be the saddle leather to the bridle, if you can do so while meeting the other criteria. But truthfully the bridle and saddle are so far apart that minor changes in color aren't that noticable. Jumping boots - they will come and go so they wouldn't even cross my mind. Girth? Look around and see what's popular in your area, and then buy a similar girth that fits your horse well.

Okay so i got new Ariat Challenge (the old ones not the brand new version 2) tall boots around March. I rode in them for about two weeks to break them in. I noticed some black shoe polish coming off of them onto my girth and saddle pads but, I figured it was the stuff that the polish them with when they are brand new. So i cleaned them and keep in mind i have NEVER polished them... So after those 2 weeks i have ridden in them for about 3 horse shows. I was cleaning them today and every time i wipe off the soap i get just black polish looking stuff. At the show this weekend my brand new saddle got some black on it and my girth... It just keeps coming off and i have NEVER EVER polished them? What do i do! Do i just keep trying to clean it all off? HELP me !

I had a pair of leather boots that did the same, it came off on the saddle and my breeches, its to do with the tanning that they use, after a while it did stop and they were fine, I have had other leather boots and this never happened from day one, it just seems to depend on what they treat them with, sorry no real advise how to stop it apart from in time it will stop, but I could not find anything that would help apart from time. Sorry

What are the best saddle pads/cinchs to use with a Western saddle? I need a show pad, and I would like to get a new cinch, but I don't know which are best. My horse is a blue roan 14hand POA with a full blanket, so I want a relatively plain pad that doesn't compete with her spots.

It depends on your horse's back about which type of pad. If she has a bad back, an air ride pad would probably be best. Air ride pads are very easy on a horse's back. It is very easy on your horse's back and offers a lot of protection

As for cinches, I have used roper cinches, felt cinches, and neoprene cinches. I didn't like the neoprene; it had a tendency to slip if the horse sweat a lot. You have to be careful with roper cinches because they can irritate some horses because of their width. But that all depends on the horse.
