How to you measure the tree of a saddle?

(Not the seat size, I mean if it has a narrow, medium or wide tree) Or if you can tell me websites where I can get the information

A narrow tree is generally made for gaited horses, and might have a narrow gullet measurement - 6 1/2" or less.
A medium tree is usually described as having quarter horse bars - qhb.
A wide tree will have a wide gullet - 7" or so - and be called full quarter horse bars, or fqhb.

If you have a saddle you are wondering about, you might try calling the manufacturer and ask them what saddle you have. Are there serial numbers on a plate, or other numbers that you see, that will help you/them in deciding what saddle you have? (I called the maker of a saddle that was made 5 years ago - they still had the info)

Western saddles....good buy?

There is a tack shop about an hour from my house here in NC that sells Buffalo, Circle S, Showman and Billy Cook saddles. I have been shopping around online, comparing prices and theirs can't be beat. I found a saddle that I like, but since I have ridden hunt seat my whole life and just switched to western, I am new to all this. Does this saddle look like a good buy for the money? I really like the way it looks. Is this a practical saddle for just hitting the trails and pleasure riding? Please help, I have ridden western before, but I've just never had to buy western tack. Thanks!

It looks pretty nice, though my advice would be to go to a store that sells that exact saddle and try it out...everyone is different and a saddle that may be comfy for one may be terrible for another...and really on a trail all your worried about is comfort : )

Sadle and tack cleaners for my new horses tack?

Leather cleaners?
Well I have very nice tack ( A new Anky dressage bridle, a new jump bridle, new girth, new brestplate, a new stuben saddle and new leather halter) and I have dicided I would like to raise the care of my tack. Here are some questions to ask:

Everthing from the kind and color of sponge, to the write kind of boot buffer(metal cleaner, shampoo, conditioner, boot shine, and ect.)

The product(s) that I should aviod

How often I should do a deep clean/take everything apart.

I would like to take good care of my tack becuse about $2,000.00 in new tack im not going to misuse what I have

What I use in my store to keep the saddles I sell nice and supple is a product called Leather CPR. it cleans, conditons and softens the leather. We have florescent lighting in the store and my saddle stans are three tiered so the saddles get pretty close tot he lights. Before I started using this on the saddles when I took over the equine section, all the leather tack was dried out, disclored and in horrible condition. We had to clearance a lot out to get it gone and get all new stuff. i started using the Leather CPR and have noticed not only is there no drying out of the leather but some of the older stuff that had dried out has regained almost 95% of it's suppleness. I personally don't like neatsfoot oil but you can use it and it will darken leather to an extent. For heavens sake though do not soak anything in neatsfoot oil overnight. Yes you will get a nice rich brown color especially if you had light tack and wnated it darker, however exposing it to that much neatsfoot oil for that long of a time will cause the stitching to rot more quickly than regular use. If it is light and you don't like the color of it, rub it every other day with the enatsfoot oil, let it sit for about and hour and then wipe off the excess. Mink oil will also darken leather some and it's a "jelly" type pastey product, you rub it in , let stand 15 minutes and rub off the excess. It also helps to condition and waterproof your tack to an extent. as for silver cleaning (not bits though) i love "mother's mag polis" you can find it at an auto supply store, it is generally used on rims and what not on cars but I have found it works wonders cleaning old silver and maintaing the shine of new silver. Sponges i just use the 12 pack of synthetic sponges you can buy at any tack shop, though some people prefer a natural sponge. It really is a personal choice. Shampoos and conditoner are we talking for the horse? My fave (b/c I have palominos and greys) is white n brite shampoo. it darkesn the dark colors and makes whites sparkle. Conditoner I use the cowboy magic demineralizer conditoner. Boot shine to be honest I am not the one that shines my boots! i'll clean them but my dad who is an ex-marine and now retired police officer shines them for me! lol Having been a marine he can get a hell yeah shine on them that I can't get so about once a month hhe shines my boots up nice:) I deep clean my tack once a month at home and the store tack i do weekly. Everytime I am done riding I try and wipe it all down with a chamois cloth. This method has worked well for me for over 10 years. I have a super nice barrel saddle that cost more than my current horse and it still looks like it's maybe 2 years old instead of 10 even the silver on it!

Where can I find a good fitting saddle pad for an HDR saddle?

I have a close contact HDR saddle and I'm looking for a good fitting pad to go with it. A hunter/jumper pad would be best. HDR saddles have very high knee pads though, so the saddle pads I've been using just slide back and the saddle leaves sore marks where it's rubbed. Any suggestions on where I can find one would be great! Thanks!

I'm not a fan of HDR saddles because of where and how they are made, however, if there's a pad that can help your situation, Tolkat probably has one.

Western Saddle question. Does anyone know?

I am looking for information on a maker. I bought a hand tooled, custom made roping saddle. The saddle has gorgeous tooling and is on a Wade tree but what I don't know anythink about is the maker. It is by Western Saddlery. Does anyone know where they are located, any history? I would like to find out what the retail price was on this saddle and ask a few questions to the maker.

Please don't give me opinion or guess work on value. I am only looking for hard facts about "Western Saddlery" and where they are located.
Yes, it is hand crafted by Western Saddlery and the workmanship is fantastic. I wish the actual name of the saddlesmith was on the saddle but I only know the shop name. I haven't heard of it before. I bought this saddle from the West Coast. I'm hoping someone out there has some info regarding these saddles. This is not the only saddle ever produced I'm sure of that, fi it were that man/woman missed his true calling. The saddle is stunning.

Riser pad for western saddle?

I have an Arabian that I am trying to get a saddle to fit. I am purchasing a new saddle for him, but, I have to wait for my tax refund!Lol. Until then, I have a saddle that fits fairly well but, I thought it might benefit from a riser pad. I know there are some for english saddles.. can they be used with western? Are there certain types that only western can use?

I looked on eBay a bit and saw just neoprene ones that have been cut from a normal pad.. would that be sufficient?

Once again, I'm just using this as a temporary fix..

If it's just temporary, go with the first one. It's cheaper and if you are only using it a few times, it should work just fine.

The second one looks better, but it's more expensive and if you are only using it a few times, it's not worth it. I believe it can be used for Western as well.

Sizeing for a Numnah?

I have a 15.3 7 yr TB and a 17" Saddle.. He usually takes cob or even pony. His halter and bridle are cob and his martingal but we always have to shortnen it.. Im ordering a numnah on the internet from the UK and i was looking at my saddle pads and they all say Full but im not sure if thats going to be to big so would a Cob or Full be better?

Go for a full - the full size will fit a bigger variety of saddle sizes than anything else. I would much rather a slightly larger numnah than one that is too small. Mine is a full size and fits anything from 16.5" regular flapped saddles all the way up to 18" with forward and long flaps.

what size saddle would fit a half draft?

i am wondering what size saddle would fit a half draft.
he is chunky like a draft, but i'm just not sure.
he's half percheron and i'm unsure of the other half
his picture is on my profile.

also if he does need a draft saddle would this one be ok, or is ebay not good? also, (sorry so many questions) what kind of leather does this look like?

I have bought saddles online and then had to sell them again because they weren't quite right and I lost money on them too. You are far better trying to get one you can check for size before you actually pay for it..
My horse is half draft and doesn't need a draft saddle - he's not even a wide so I'd definitely recommend getting him measured before spending any money.

How do I repair a Cheyenne roll that has came unglued from the cantle of my Western saddle?

I have a Western saddle, that the Cheyenne roll has come unglued on. The rolls leather separated/came unglued from the wood of the cantle. I can see where it was glued before and I was wondering if I need to take it to a saddle repair shop, or if I can get the Heavy Duty Super Glue, made for all items, such as wood and leather and use it. -OR- do I need to purchase something special to repair it? I have used Super Glue on another saddle part before, and it worked out very well. Of course these repairs were cosmetic and not anything that would hinder the saddles ability to be ridden in.

The unglued roll, doesn't affect the way the saddle rides, but does make it hard to carry the saddle and I prefer to have it fixed the easiest way I can.

What you need it to be able to tack it to your cantle AFTER you glue it. BUT I don't know what type of tree it has so, instead, I'll tell you to buy some CONTACT CEMENT. Coat both where it's going to be glued to on BOTH SIDES. Let the contact glue DRY, then like rubber cement attach it back to where it was. BE VERY careful 'cause it will stain your leather if you get any droplets on the rest of your back skirts.

CLAMP it down on both sides with clamps or C-Clamps and boards, let dry for about a week that way, then you're all set for a few years.
